Interview and Giveaway with Julian Vaughan Hampton

Julian Vaughan Hampton is the author is numerous works of varying genre's, ranging from crime dramas to thrillers to children's fiction. He also writes screenplays and poetry. Julian was kind enough to stop by Frazzled Book Nommer to talk a little bit about his most recent book The Adventures of Annie Marmalade: Quest of the Ronji Crystal. It was a delightfully ingenious piece of children's fiction - you can read my full review of it here. Without further ado, please help me in welcoming Julian!

First of all, I'd like to thank you for agreeing to interview with me, Julian!

The people of Goodhaven all have individual gifts, sort of like powers. The main character, Annie, has the ability to make desserts, which is refreshingly unique. How did you come up with the idea of using desserts (like taffy lasso's) to replace ordinary objects?

It was enjoyable coming up with all of these fun and tasty weapons for Annie. When I thought about a little girl with a special gift, I wanted to have the perfect power to defeat her enemies. Her greatest gift is her imagination, so she uses that to create desserts to match the giants of Debor. I wanted children to connect to her power. I thought "What's more fun than using the one thing kids enjoy as a power?" I put Annie in difficult situations and looked for ways to get her out of them. Annie is one tough cookie.

Annie was very brave in the face of danger and always thought outside the box. Was her personality influenced by anyone (a daughter, niece, etc)?

I took some aspects of each child that has been a part of my life. As adults, we are so worried about what people think. We are concerned about our children getting hurt or the consequences for the choices they make. With children, they just want to enjoy their lives. They see life as an adventure and they want to have as much fun facing the challenges within their lives. I was that way, so I created Annie to have that same vigor. To a child, one of the scariest parts of life is boring, so her brave nature was just Annie avoiding boredom.

Was it difficult writing about a little girl?

I focused on writing more as a child than a little girl. I had to take myself back to my childhood and the excitement I had within my small adventures. The fun came in the story when I needed to balance the enthusiasm of a child with the sensitivity of a little girl. Annie's movement from self-doubt to self-awareness is something most of us have faced as children.

Your other novels are completely different genre's, ranging from poetry to crime dramas to mystery. What made you decide to write a fantasy novel?

I didn't set out to write a fantasy children's book. I wanted to tell an exciting story with a new type of hero using a new form of heroism. The characters began to take on lives of their own. I try not to pick a genre. I'd rather start writing a story and when its completed, the genre will speak for itself. I love the thought of creating through imagination, which is a key element in fantasy. Whether its a poem, a crime drama, an adventure, a mystery, or a family drama, the key for me is to enjoy the story. I don't want to write fantasy for children. I'd rather write a fantastic story with the spirit of a child.

What was the hardest part about writing a children fiction book?

The hardest part was avoiding the boring parts of the book. With any novel, there are portions of the book that can slow the pace of the story. I wanted to avoid this by giving the children a fast-paced book that moves from one entertaining scene from another. I also wanted to teach some life lessons within the story. Children want to enjoy their books, but if I could subconsciously teach them morals, I knew the book would be successful.

What is your favorite children's book? Did you draw any inspiration from it?

My favorite children's books were a series called "Choose Your Own Path." These books allowed the reader to determine what road they would take to solve a mystery or complete an adventure. It also showed how the choices they made affected their ability to reach their goal. The books did inspire me within some of my books. In The Adventures of Annie Marmalade, I allowed Annie to make some of those choices, while the reader could look on the effects of her decisions.

Is there a message you want to convey to young children with your book?

I'd like children to value their gifts, whatever that gift may be. I'd also like them to know that no matter their size, they can be heroes to their community. The last message would be to use their imagination. The can create their success through it.

Do you have plans to make this book a series?

I have left that option open. I already have ideas in the works for the sequel, so I think Annie may have another adventure or two in her.

Are you currently working on any projects? If yes, can you tell us a little about them?

Since I write books and screenplays, my next projects are vastly different. I'm working on an inspirational family drama, a sports drama, and another childrens' book.

I personally hope that there will be a sequel (sequels?!) to Annie's adventures - I didn't want them to stop! A huge thank you to Julian for interviewing with me! :) Now, for the giveaway! Julian has generously offered to give away a copy of The Adventures of Annie Marmalade!

Happy Birthday to me~ Giveaway

So, I've been taking it easy review-wise this week. I've been getting things ready for next week, because I won't be here, and have been particularly been lazy since Thanksgiving. Why?

Because today (the 27th) is my 21st birthday! I'm officially 252 months; 1095 weeks; 7670 days; 184082 hours; 11044924 minutes; 662695445 seconds old today! (And no, I didn't do that on my own - my cousin messaged me that; I'm the mathematically challenged one in the family!) I can officially drink and get wasted... legally. ;)

I am a Thanksgiving baby. I was supposed to have been born on Thanksgiving in 1989, but apparently I didn't want to come out. So, Thanksgiving is my birthday every four years. It wasn't this year, of course. I think 2012 is the next one... ? Anyway.

For my birthday, I'm giving away a signed copy of The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. It was released last October 12, 2010 by Delacorte Press. Yep, one lucky person will win the sequel to The Maze Runner! If you haven't read the Maze Runner series, I highly recommend it. In fact, you can check out my review of The Maze Runner here. (Shameless advertising; it's my birthday, I can do what I want, right?) What the heck does The Scorch Trials have to do with my birthday, or any birthdays for that matter? Absolutely nothing. But it's a good book. ;)

Contest Rules:
- Only open to US/Canadian residents. Again, so sorry international folks - I'm way too poor to afford int. shipping. I'm so poor I can't even buy myself a celebratory drink for happy hour today. :(
- No PO boxes, please.
- Giveaway ends December 11 at 11:59PM PST.
- Must, must fill out the form! While comments are appreciated (especially the "happy b-day" ones!), I won't accept entries made from the comments.

Required Extra Entries:
This one is SUPER easy. All you have to do to get an extra entry is wish me a happy birthday on the form under the designated box. Since I'm feeling particularly happy today, I might add a second extra entry with how creative/mushy you get. ;)

Breaking it down in case I was confusing:
+1 Tell me happy birthday
+2 Creatively or mushily (it's a word now, dangit!) tell me happy birthday. :P

Now, before you think I'm lame for asking that/making it required, know that I'll be completely and utterly alone on my birthday. My entire family abandoned me, haha. So, I'll be in my room, wishing I could afford a drink, singing, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to..." Lonely bookish hermits need some b-day love, too!

Giveaway: Sundays At Tiffany's by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet

AN IMAGINARY FRIEND
Jane Margaux is a lonely little girl. Her mother, the powerful head of a New York theater company, makes time for her only once a week, for their Sunday trip to admire jewelry at Tiffany's. Jane has only one friend: a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael. He's perfect. But only she can see him. Michael can't stay forever, though. On Jane's eighth birthday he leaves, promising that she'll forget him soon. He was there to help her until she was old enought o manage on her own, and now there are other children who need his help.

AN UNEXPECTED LOVE
Years later, in her thirties, Jane is just as alone as she was as a child. And despite her own success as a playwright, she is even more trapped by her overbearing mother. Then she meets Michael again--as handsome, smart and perfect as she remembers him to be. But not even Michael knows the reason they've really been reunited.

AND AN UNFORGETTABLE TWIST
Sundays at Tiffany's is a heart-wrenching love story that surpasses all expectations of why these people have been brought together. With the breathtaking momentum and gripping emotional twists that have made James Patterson a bestseller all over the world, Sundays at Tiffany's takes an altogether fresh look at the timeless and transforming power of love.

Sundays at Tiffany's is now a Lifetime original movie from Sony Pictures Television and will be airing on Mon, Dec. 6 at 9 PM ET/PT, 8PM CT.

Thanks to Valerie at Hachette Book Group, I have one paperback copy of Sundays at Tiffany's to offer you guys in celebration of the Lifetime movie release! :)

Interview and Giveaway with Marie Simas

Marie Simas is the author of Do Tampons Take Your Virginity?, which is a chick-lit memoir. It's an emotionally intense memoir with comic relief sprinkled on top. You can read my review of it here and read more about Marie at her personal site. Marie was kind enough to stop by Frazzled Book Nommer and answer a few questions!

Was it more difficult writing a memoir as opposed to a piece of fiction?

Yes. Writing this memoir was exhausting. I went through dozens of drafts and three editors. The first few drafts were a lot angrier and less humorous. I got feedback that it was too raw and needed to be toned down, so I did it. I don't want my readers to feel beat up-- I want them to enjoy the book. That's hard when the topic includes a downer like child abuse. It takes a lot of effort to make the entire manuscript an enjoyable read. I'm happier with the final product because I got input from many different writing pros. Sometimes it takes a village.

Were there any reservations or qualms you had about publishing a memoir?

Yes, lots. All the names have been changed, of course. At first, I wasn't going to publish it. I was just writing during the NaNoWriMo, and this is what came out. Even after I showed the manuscript to people who raved about it, I still wasn't planning to publish it.

You might laugh, but the real reason I finally decided to publish this story is because of a random episode of Oprah. I'm not a fan of the show, but I happened to be home one day in the middle of the afternoon. I was flipping the channels and it was the episode with Mo'Nique's brother, who had sexually assaulted her as a child, and now was "speaking out" about it. Mo'Nique had just been awarded an Oscar for her blistering performance in the movie Precious. She was not present at the interview.

All of her family members were out there supporting the brother, (the molester). I just couldn't believe it. The impression I got was that they were all mad because Mo'Nique went public about the rapes and didn't shut her mouth-- they were all embarrassed that everyone had to find out about their dirty little secret. Oprah was trying to keep her composure, but she looked like she wanted to crawl out of her skin, sitting next to him while he defended the molestation of his little sister. I wanted to throttle them ALL.

I thought about it, then-- so, this is how it is everywhere. Every family has dirty secrets. No one talks about it. They just want to bury it under the rug.

After that, I decided to publish. Sunlight is the best antiseptic, after all.

Does your family know you’ve written a memoir, or have any of them read Do Tampons Take Your Virginity?

No one in my family has read it, as far as I know. I didn't exactly ask anyone for permssion. I doubt that anyone would have agreed.

I know some of the chapters aren’t chronological, so how did you go about writing and putting together your memoir?

I relied heavily on my editors to help figure the best order for the chapters. They were all written in random order, and then my editors created an outline based on their reading of the material.

How long was the writing process for Do Tampons Take Your Virginity?

About 16 months, from start to finish. I had to put it down at least twice for an extended period because I was losing my objectivity. That happens sometimes. But I picked it back up after a month or so and started working again.

In the book, you mentioned that you wanted to major in art. Have you ever picked up art again, even as an enjoyable past-time?

I've tried. Sometimes I go into art stores, and it's still really emotional for me. In my city, there's a shop downtown called "Universal Art," with all kinds of fine art supplies, really high-end. Last time I went in there, I walked through the aisles and started touching everything. Then I picked up some handmade paper and smelled it, and I started sobbing uncontrollably and I had to leave. I haven't gone back.

It's hard for me to talk about, because my artwork used to win awards. I've never been able to get it back. I don't know if I ever will. In some ways, this was more depressing for me than any of the abuse. It's like a candle was blown out.

If there was one piece of advice you could say to a little girl in a similar situation as yours when you were young, what would you say to them?

It gets better. Don't kill yourself. Don't cut yourself. Look into the mirror, and tell yourself that you are beautiful, smart, and that you're going to make it. If no one in your house is saying anything positive to you, go into the bathroom, look into the mirror, and say something positive to yourself. I'm not bullshitting. I used to do it. I remember the first time I went into the bathroom, and looked into the mirror, and said "I love you" to my own reflection. No one ever said it to me, and one day I just decided that I deserved to hear it from someone. Self-love is a powerful love. It makes you strong. It can help you survive your darkest moments. Create your own beacon of hope. It will sustain you, I promise.

Do you have any future works planned?

Yes, I'm entering the NaNo again this year. I don't have any ideas yet, but they always appear when I'm ready.

A huge, huge thank you to Marie for agreeing to do an interview with me! And now, onto the giveaway! :)

How do I enter to win?

Each blog has their own giveaway and their own rules.  The giveaways will start at midnight EST on the morning of September 10th and run through 11:59pm on the night of the 12th.  That's a whole 72 hours that you get to visit as many blogs as you want and enter their amazing giveaways.

What is this Tracking Site?

This is a site designed by me and developed by my live-in IT guru at

BlogFest 2010 is hosted by Cinnamon at A Journey Of Books. The BlogFest is running now through September 12th at 11:59pm EST! There's a HUGE list of participating blogs when you click on Cinnamon's Blog.

The tracking site is an excellent way to chart your progress through the list of blogs -- I know I would have forgotten where I was in the list if I didn't have that list. If you have any problems, just e-mail Cinnamon. I had a bunch of problems and she was so helpful, and she responded really fast. <3

So... This is why I've been M.I.A since Friday, haha. I had planned to get out 3 reviews and a Blog Hop, but that never happened because I had just remembered BlogFest was this weekend through various tweets. I sluggishly went through that ENTIRE list, and let me tell you: I'm ready to drop. I feel like a grandma. Man, my fingers and shoulders are going to fall off! :P The sad part? I only did bare minimum.

Anyway, I hope you all go on over and check it out! I know I posted this late so most of you have probably gone through at least some of the list, but it's better to be safe and spread the word than say nothing at all! :P
